MCRCC believes prevention is possible. Prevention work is a foundational piece of our center and a key part of our mission to end gender based violence. All of our prevention work is research-informed, evidence-based, and culturally relevant to best serve the communities in Monterey County. MCRCC uses a public health approach to our work, and focuses on promoting protective factors that decrease the risk of sexual violence.
MCRCC provides age appropriate prevention education to students from kindergarten through high school and college. The Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP) brings safety information to students at least three times throughout their K-6th grade education. Students learn about safe touches, trusted adults, and boundary setting. In high school, students can elect to be a part of prevention clubs, called My Life and MyStrength, to address harmful behaviors and see themselves as leaders in making their campus and community safer. At CSUMB, prevention programs are facilitated by our Campus Advocate, who offers a variety of services to institutions of higher education.
Our work on campuses includes advocacy as primary or secondary prevention. We offer advocacy and support for students affected by sexual harassment, sexual assault, child abuse, or commercial sexual exploitation. We also offer trainings to teachers and school staff who are interested in strengthening their knowledge and skills in preventing sexual violence.
